Everything that makes up God’s divine essence (the essential things that make God Who and What He is) are ascribed to each of the three Persons of the Godhead (Deuteronomy 6:4; Mark 12:29).
Sovereignty: The Father is said to work “all things after the counsel of His own will” (Ephesians 1:11; cf. Psalms 40:8; Matthew 6:10; Hebrews 10:7,9). Jesus said, “…even so the Son quickens whom He will” (John 5:21). In Revelation 19:16, Jesus Christ is “KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” The Holy Spirit sovereignly divides “to every man [gifts] severally as He will” (1 Corinthians 12:13; cf. Hebrews 2:4).
Righteousness: Jesus prayed, “O righteous Father” (John 17:25). The Son is declared to be holy (Luke 1:35; Hebrews 7:26), and without sin (2 Corinthians 5:21); and the very name of the Holy Spirit reveals this facet of His character.
Justice: “Touching the Almighty, we cannot find Him out: He is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice (Job 37:23; cf. 8:3). Jesus Christ is described in Acts 3:14 as “the Holy One and the Just”; all judgment is committed unto the Son (John 5:22), who judges in righteousness (Revelation 19:11). Nehemiah said of the Holy Spirit, “You gave also your good spirit to instruct them …” (Nehemiah 9:20).
Love: The Father’s love is expressed in sending His Son (John 3:16; 9:4) and in His Plan for believers (1 John 2:15; 3:1; 4:19). The Son’s love is manifested through the Cross (Ephesians 5:25; 1 John 3:16); and the Holy Spirit’s love is demonstrated in revealing salvation (John 16:7-11) as well as doctrine (1 Corinthians 2:10).
Eternal Life: Jesus declared in John 5:26: “For as the Father hath [eternal] life in Himself, so hath He given to the Son to have life in Himself.” Of the Son it was predicted: “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah (the city of Bethlehem), though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2; cf. John 1:1,2; 1 John 5:11; Revelation 1:8,17). The Spirit is said to be eternal in Hebrews 9:14.
Omniscience (all-knowing/knows all there is to know):
The Father: “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13; cf. Matthew 11:27; 1 Peter 1:2).
The Son: “Jesus therefore, knowing all things …” (John 18:4; cf. Matthew 9:4; John 2:25; 1 Corinthians 4:5).
The Holy Spirit: “And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding … the Spirit of knowledge …” (Isaiah 11:2 cf. 1 Corinthians 2:11).
Omnipresence (present everywhere):
The Father: … the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain Him … ” (2 Chronicles 2:6).
The Son: Jesus said, “lo, I am with you always …” (Matthew 28:20; cf. Ephesians 1:23).
The Holy Spirit: “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?” (Psalms 139:7).
Omnipotence (all-powerful):
Of the Father’s omnipotence, Christ said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee …” (Mark 14:36; cf. 1 Peter 1:5).
Jesus said of Himself, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18; cf. Matthew 24:30; 2 Corinthians 12:9; Philippians 3:21; Hebrews 1:3; Revelation 1:8; 19:6). Jesus Christ demonstrated His power at one time when He spoke a word and 185,000 Assyrian infantryman dropped dead (Isaiah 37:36). He demonstrated the physical strength of His humanity when He bodily threw the money changers out of the Temple (Matthew 21:12). He will again slay the enemy with the word of His mouth at the Second Advent (Revelation 19:15, 21). By the power of His Word (Luke 4:32) He healed the sick, forgave sin (Luke 5;24), raised the dead (Luke 7:22) and imparted eternal life (John 10:28).
Of the Holy Spirit’s power we read, “Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God …” (Romans 15:19).
Immutability (unchanging):
The Father: “… God … to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath” (Hebrews 6:17).
The Son: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
The Holy Spirit: “Faithful to indwell the believer forever” (John 14:16).
Veracity (absolute truthfulness): At the feast of Tabernacles, Jesus answered the unbelieving Jews “… I am not come of myself, but He [the Father] that sent me is true …” (John 7:28). Later, He prayed, “… that they might know thee the only true God …” (John 17:3). Of the Son, John said, “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20; cf. John 1:145; 14:6; Revelation19:11). It was John again who said, “… it is the Spirit that bears witness, because the Spirit is truth” (1 John 5:6; cf. John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13).
